Triad BioNight

Over 250 people joined together at the Piedmont Triad Research Park in Winston-Salem to celebrate Triad BioNight on Thursday, March 1, 2007.

The keynote address "Keeping the Promise of Biotechnology" was given by Jim Greenwood, President & CEO, Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

Five leaders in the Triad's rapidly-growing biotechnology sector received awards on March 1st:

Vincent Henrich, director of the Center for Biotechnology, Genomics and Health Research at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, received the Research and Development Excellence Award. (2005 winner: Dr. Anthony Atala, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center)

Donald deBethizy, chief executive officer of Targacept, received the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award. (2005 winner: Roland Johnson, Piedmont Pharmaceuticals)

A. Edward Uprichard, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNCG, received the Academic Development Excellence Award. (2005 winners: Dr. Gary Green and Dr. Lucas Shallua, Forsyth Technical Community College)

The Piedmont Biotechnology Community Leadership Excellence Award went to the staff of the Office of Technology Asset Management at Wake Forest University. (2005 winner: Gwyn Riddick, North Carolina Biotechnology Center)

Russ Read, executive director for the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce, received the Biotechnology Service/Support Excellence Award. (2005 winner: Bill Dean, Piedmont Triad Research Park)

PTEN Competitions

Launched in 2005, the Growth Accelerator Program (GAP) is the upgraded version of the Spark/Verge/Fuel business plan competition.

26 Executive Summaries were submitted for judging in November 2005, 10 finalist companies were selected in December 2005 and the three top ventures were named in May 2006 at PTEN's Celebration of Entrepreneurs event: Aqualutions, AudioFusion and Cleantechnics International.
